Europe is a global leader in renewable energy when it comes to technology development and deployment. Uruguay is at the forefront in the use of renewable energy where more than 90% of its electricity generation originates from renewable sources. European companies and technologies play a vital role in the green hydrogen projects outlined in Uruguay's Hydrogen Roadmap.
Cooperation ties between the European Union and Uruguay in energy are very strong. In 2023, they signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on “renewable energies, energy efficiency and renewable hydrogen”. Based on this commitment, senior officials from Uruguay and the European Union maintain regular bilateral dialogues on the topic. In addition, investments on green hydrogen are one of the priorities of the Global Gateway Investment Agenda of the European Union in the country.
